When Home Depot purchased the Bay Area YardBIRDS stores in 2005,
they turned to Shames Construction to convert these stores into
their new smaller format store concept. The stores which
emphasize tools, hardware and accessories are about half the
size of a typical Home Depot and range from 56,000 sq ft to
34,000 sq ft. The stores have Home Depot colors & signs, but
five of the seven stores don’t carry any lumber at all. The
company refers to the YardBIRDS model as an “infill retail
format” for densely populated suburban and urban markets and all
feature an expanded line of home appliances, bathroom fixtures
and paint. The stores also have a garden center and carry hard
surface flooring, but no carpet. The stores carry most
merchandise categories found in a standard Home Depot , but
since variety is limited, there are several catalog kiosks
located throughout the store for special orders. The
conversation was completed in the Spring of 2007 with the
opening of the final store in Alamo, Ca.
